Let us describe some of the popular wine varieties and the regions where they come from in this article. First, let’s describe popular white wines. Chardonnay for examples are typically made in California, France, Australia and many other places in the world. A Sauvignon Blanc are typical from California, France, New Zealand and occasionally South Africa.
Rieslings are typically German, but California, Austria, Australia and the East Coast of USA have all done a good job lately as well. Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris is usually Italian, but Germany, France and California also have their own versions which are quite successful. Gewürztraminer is typically only German, just like Soave is typically only Italian.
Red wines are a little bit more traditional to a region, with a few exceptions. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot can come from many places, particularly France, California, Australia even South America. Pinot Noir is also very heavily made in North America.
The other red wines are very particular to the region. Beaujolais is only made in France for example, as are wines of Cotes Du Rhone. Another French red wine varieties are from Bordeaux. The two most popular Italian red wines are going to be Lombroso & Chianti. California also has its own red wine favorite, it is Zinfandel.
What about sparking wine? Well, most places in the world refer to sparking wine as Champagne. This was legal until recently, when a pact has made it illegal to refer to sparkling wine as champagne, unless it really does come from the French region. You see, Champagne is a place in France which was very well known for their sparkling wines. The name Champagne became synonymous with sparkling wine around the world.
